The Washington Redskins are making a much-needed change announcing Monday they will retire their nickname and logo.
According to ESPN, after a thorough review conducted the past couple weeks, the team announced the retirement of the Redskins name and logo on the “completion of the review.”
It has been widely expected and long overdue that this change was imminent but got speed up once Washington’s major sponsors FedEx, Pepsi and of course, Nike pulled their financials, products and advertising out over the last couple weeks forcing team owner Dan Snyder’s hand on making this move.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the franchise moving forward will not use any Native American imagery but will retain their team colors.
Both Snyder and head coach Ron Rivera are “working closely to develop a new name and design an approach that will enhance the team, community and fans for the next 100 years,” according to the team.
The rumors in the mill is that Washington is leaning towards the nickname, the Warriors, which seem to be popular among the fans, the team, the community and media outlets.
