A week after removing a racist status from their facilities, the Washington Redskins announced they will retire Bobby Mitchell’s No. 49.
Mitchell of course was the team’s first black player as the Redskins were the last team in the league to integrate in 1962.
According to ESPN, he is only the second player in Washington’s 88-year history to have his number retired but was certainly deserving so.
The Hall-of-Famer running back was a four-time Pro-Bowler (1960, 1962-1964), three-time All-Pro was a dynamic rushing and receiving threat with the Redskins from 1962-68.
The Hot Springs, Arkansas native then joined the Washington staff as an executive from 1969-2002 overseeing three Super Bowl Championships in that process.
In total, Mitchell spent over 41 years with the team and rightfully deserved this great accomplishment.
