Utah suspends D-coordinator Morgan Scalley for racial text message in 2013

Chris's Corner

Utah has suspended defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley and launched an internal investigation concerning a 2013 text message that included a racial slur, the school announced Friday.

According to ESPN, Utes Athletic Director Mark Harlan was made aware last Wednesday of the text message and after speaking to Scalley is very contrite and regretful of the mistake.

Harlan told sources he consulted with Utah President Ruth Watkins that an outside law firm will conduct a review to determine if this was an isolated or interlinked incident.

Utes coach Kyle Whittingham said he was “disappointed and shocked,” to learn about the text message.

Scalley, a former All-American safety for the Utes, has served as an assistant coach for the previous 12 seasons including the last four as defensive coordinator. He was a finalist for the Broyles Award, which honors the top assistant in college football.
