The University of Cincinnati is the next college to make progressive changes announcing Tuesday it will remove Marge Schott’s name from its campus baseball stadium.
According to ESPN, the university’s board of trustees unanimously voted to remove Schott’s name from the university’s stadium and library citing a “record of racism and bigotry.”
Former Bearcat outfielder Jordan Ramey started a petition to remove Schott’s name, gaining 10,000 signatures and counting. That plus the combination of school president Neville Pinto recommendation resulted in Schott’s removal.
The Bearcats baseball stadium was named Marge Schott Stadium in 2006 after the school received a $2 million donation from the Marge and Charles J. Schott foundation.
Schott had a history of racism and bigotry being banned from the MLB’s Cincinnati Reds Riverfront Stadium following her comments about Adolf Hitler.
This resulted in her selling her controlling interest with the Reds in 1999. She passed away in 2004.
