UCLA football players demand coronavirus safety in document

Chris's Corner

UCLA students want protection from the coronavirus as much as they can get as Bruin football players demanded healthy and safety protection from the campus this week.

According to a document obtained by ESPN, 31 Bruin current/former players have signed a letter asking for third-party officials to oversee and enforce health and safety guidelines within the program.

Specifically more in-depth, the letter states players want to make decisions in regard to their health without scholarship or retaliation consequences from coaches, they want the third-party officials present for all team activities/events, they want a platform in which athletes/staff can directly express concerns anonymously and are asking for full transparency because of alleged past transgressions.

This document was created after a majority of team leaders met virtually demanding their concerns over the growing deadly virus.

UCLA athletic director Martin Jarmond addressed each of the players concerns in a document stating, “the decision to return to campus is entirely up to the player and each are welcomed to stay home but none will receive any form of retaliation for not participating in the voluntary workouts this Fall.”

In addition, the school has set up an anonymous hotline and web link where players can share any concerns as well as the faculty’s athletics representative Michael Teitall is expected to be around the football program when there’s a full return.

UCLA received approval for athletes to return to campus Monday.
