The moment Spurs guard Lonnie Walker cut his signature hairstyle he was not only saying goodbye to a very distinguishable look but also freeing himself of painful memories.
The 21-year-old second-year guard out of Miami (FL), revealed that he started to grow his hair out when he was sexually abused as a child.
According to ESPN/Walker’s Instagram post, he was sexually harassed, raped and abused by an unnamed family member and tried to mask the pain through hiding his appearance.
Fortunately, Walker ended the post saying he has found peace and internal happiness through his journey.
The NBA has increasingly focused toward mental health with advocates such as All-Star Kevin Love and Demar DeRozan sharing their experiences too.
According to ESPN, heading into the upcoming season every team is now required to have at least one mental health professional that they can use as a resource.
Last season Walker averaged 5.6-points and 2.2-boards for the Spurs last season.
