Pittsburgh star pitcher Chris Archer’s next season is already over as the team announced Thursday he will undergo season-ending thoracic outlet syndrome surgery.
The 31-year-old had surgery performed by Dr. Robert Thompson for lingering discomfort in the neck/shoulder area on his right side he had endured since March.
According to ESPN, Archer struggled immensely in 2018 going 6-12 with a 4.92 ERA in 33 starts since being acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays.
Pittsburgh holds an $11 million club option for 2021 with a $250,000 buyout so he may not even be on the club next year but the Pirates will have to role with Trevor Williams, Joe Musgrove, Mitch Keller and Derek Holland next season.
