The Philadelphia 76ers continue to make huge offseason moves grabbing the biggest fish in the pond announcing the hiring of head coach Doc Rivers to a five-year deal Friday morning.
According to ESPN, Rivers deal comes just three days after getting let go from the Los Angeles Clippers where he will return back to the Eastern Conference and ironically bring back the rivalry between the Boston Celtics, where he had his most success as a head coach capturing an NBA Championship in 2008.
Rivers will have his work cut out for him as the 76ers have been perpetually underachieving since drafting Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid during “the process,” days this season exiting in the first round at the hands of the Boston Celtics.
General Manager Elton Brand and the organization is hellbent on building a championship team around Simmons and Embiid but are in salary-cap hell with ugly contracts given to third-best-player-on-any-great team Tobias Harris and verge-of-retirement Al Horford.
Doc Rivers is a Hall-of-Fame coach winning (943-681) with a .581% winning percentage making the playoffs 16 of the last 21 seasons he has coached capturing an NBA Championship in 2008 with the Boston Celtics and their “Big Three,” of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen.
