Phillies and Blue Jays shut down facilities after one confirmed case of COVID-19

Chris's Corner

The coronavirus has now hit the MLB as both the Philadelphia Phillies and Toronto Blue Jays announced closures of their training facilities in Clearwater, Florida and Dunedin Friday.

According to ESPN, the Phillies facility will remain closed until medical authorities are confident the virus is under control. The first confirmed case occurred Tuesday.

Thankfully, eight Phillies staff members have tested negative while 20 players and 12 other staff members are waiting for results.

The Blue Jays player exhibiting symptoms is a pitcher on the 40-man roster that recently spent time with players in the Phillies’ minor league and is awaiting COVID-19 results.

Both the Phillies and Blue Jays declined to comment any further but the fact remains that since the MLB just rejected the MLBPA’s 70-game proposal there is still no set date for a return of the sport.
