The Carolina Panthers suffered a big blow as running back Christian McCaffrey is expected to miss four to six weeks with a right high ankle sprain sustained in a 31-17 loss to the Bucs in Tampa Bay Sunday.
According to ESPN, the 24-year-old sustained the injury late in the third quarter then had it taped up during the break before the fourth and finally limped to the sideline following a 7-yard, fourth-down touchdown run that cut the deficit to 24-14. He did not return after.
This is the first injury sustained by the former Stanford Cardinal and his presence will surely be missed being the focal offensive centerpiece for the Panthers rushing 2,920 yards and hauling in 2,525 yards in his first three seasons as Pro; yet head coach Matt Rhule is confident that backup Mike Davis can step in and fill the void.
The 27-year-old Davis is a fourth round pick out of South Carolina in 2015 playing for four teams including the San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers including starting six games for the Hawks in 2017.
The 0-2 Panthers will take on Tyrod Taylor and the Chargers in Los Angeles this Sunday.
