NFL Power Rankings Week One

Chris's Corner

Kansas City Chiefs

Record: (1-0).

Recap: Won Vs. Houston Texans 34-20.

Breakdown: The Chiefs offense is just not fair: already returning 20 of their 22 starters and then they add rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire?! Kansas City already had the best passing offense in the NFL and now the LSU star adds another dynamic rushing for 138 yards off a robust 5.5-yards-per-carry gashing the Texans off a sensational debut but perhaps the most impressive group was the Chiefs’ defensive line that got to Deshaun Watson four times including 1.5 from star tackle Chris Jones. Kansas City will look to continue their #runitback tour when they take on the Chargers in Los Angeles’ new stadium SoFi stadium this Sunday.

Baltimore Ravens

Record: (1-0).

Recap: Won Vs. Cleveland Browns 38-6.

Breakdown: The Ravens very may have the best roster in the NFL. You want offense? They got it as Lamar Jackson is looking to defend his MVP crown as he carved up the pathetic Browns to the tune of 275 yards and three touchdowns. You want defense? Held Cleveland’s Baker Mayfield, Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt, OBJ and Jarvis Landry to just six points and first-round linebacker Patrick Queen looked awesome totaling 8 tackles with a sack and second-rounder J.K. Dobbins looked like Mark Ingram 2.0 totalling two big touchdowns in a solid rookie debut. They also have one of the best kickers in the game in Justin Tucker and a solid coach in Mr. Harbaugh. Baltimore will look to flex their muscles when they face Deshaun Watson and the Texans in Houston this Sunday.

New Orleans Saints

Record: (1-0).

Recap: Won Vs. Tampa Bay Bucs 34-23.

Breakdown: The Saints picked up right where they left off last year outright dominating Tom Brady and the new look Bucks on believe it or not the defensive unit. Jordan Cameron, Marcus Davenport, Marshon Lattimore and Demario Davis were downright dominant harassing Brady into two interceptions (one being a pick-six) and sacking him three times most of which the Saints scored points from. Drew Brees, albeit wasn’t exceptional, but Alvin Kamara looked healthy and explosiving scoring two touchdowns fresh off his newly signed extension. For now, New Orleans is the team to beat in the NFC but will have their work cut out for them this Sunday as they take on Derek Carr and the Raiders in their new Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas without superstar receiver Michael Thomas.

Seattle Seahawks

Record: (1-0).

Recap: Won Vs. Atlanta Falcons 38-25.

Breakdown: Russell Wilson won week one in two ways, the first was hs adorable child sporting his home uniform threads in this adorable pic here:

The second was going out and having one of his best games of his illustrious career completing 31-of-35 passes for 322 yards and four touchdowns torching the Falcons from the jump. How this man has zero NFL MVP votes ever; the world will never know..but I do know this he along with newly acquired Jamal Adams flying around on the defense, the Hawks will be legit contenders ever game this season and will be under the bright lights when they welcome Cam Newton and the New England Patriots to the Pacific Northwest on Sunday Night Football.

Green Bay Packers

Record: (1-0)

Recap: Won Vs. Minnesota Vikings 43-34.

Breakdown: You won’t like him when he’s angry..no I’m not talking about the Incredible Hulk, I’m talking about Aaron “freaking,” Rodgers who looked unbelievably dominant and focused against the Vikings in Minnesota carving up the Vikes young secondary to the tune of 364 yards and four touchdowns flat out owning his NFC North foe. As for the defense, edge rusher continued to feel right at home in the U.S. Bank harassing quarterback Kirk Cousins with a big sack and two quarterback hits after totaling 3.5 last season in the same stadium. You would have liked to see Aaron Jones and the run game get going more and they will certainly have that opportunity as the Rodgers revenge tour continues when the Pack takes on Matt Stafford the Detroit Lions in Lambeau Field Sunday.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Record: (1-0)

Recap: Won Vs. New York Giants 26-16.

Breakdown: Jeez Louise was that the 70’s Steel Curtain I saw against the Giants?! The Black & Gold looked like the best defense in the league against New York limiting superstar running back Saquon Barkley to just six yards off 15 carries and even more so they were flying off the ball: Bud Dupree, Vince Williams, T.J. Watt, Minkah Fitzatrick and the crew have the makings of being a special unit and if veteran Big Ben can stay healthy and continue to shake the rust off this team certainly has the potential of contending for a Super Bowl. The Steel Town will look to go (2-0) when they play Drew Lock and the injured Denver Broncos at Heinz Field Sunday.

Arizona Cardinals

Record: (1-0)

Recap: Won Vs. San Francisco 49ers 24-20.

Breakdown: I must admit I might have to eat some crow about quarterback Kyler Murray but I can’t be the only one. His diminutive stature doesn’t measure his heart and he was electric against a solid 49ers defense carving them up through the air (230 yards) and the ground (91 yards) with two total touchdowns. And the front office had a huge off-season acquisition nabbing superstar receiver DeAndre Hopkins who was his usual beastly self grabbing 14 catches for 151 big yards. As for the defense, they got after Jimmy G and limited the 49ers rush game limiting them to 20 points with three big sacks. Murray and the crew will take on youngster Dwayne Haskins and the Washington Football team late Sunday afternoon this week.

San Francisco 49ers

Record: (0-1)

Recap: Loss Vs. Arizona Cardinals 24-20.

Breakdown: Fresh off their Super Bowl appearance, the 49ers looked to have a winnable game against Kyler Murray and the bottom-feeding Cardinals. Injuries, inconsistent passing by Jimmy G and a lack of experience at the receiver position ultimately doomed the Niners in their last game against the Cardinals. The defense looked formidable as ever but their rush defense particularly containing dual-threat quarterbacks has been and is a problem that Kyle Shanahan and the Crew need to address quickly when they face Sam Darnold and the Jets in New Jersey Sunday.

Buffalo Bills

Record: (1-0)

Recap: Won Vs. New York Jets 27-17.

Breakdown: Sean Mcdermott and the BillsMafic continue to impress: Josh Allen was sporadic as always throwing for 312 yards and rushing for another 57 and two touchdowns while also fumbling it away two times giving the Jets two scores in garbage time. Stefon Diggs looked wonderful and has a real chemistry with Allen that was evident right out the jump so he along with Cole Beasley and John “Smoky” Brown have the potential to be a deep electric triple threat. As for the defense, the Bills looked solid as always limiting the Jets to under 70 yards rushing and forcing numerous turnovers all game. This may be the year Buffalo fans have been waiting 20+ years for, the season they win the AFC East and have a chance to go (2-0) when they play Fitzmagic and the Dolphins in Miami Sunday.

New England Patriots

Record: (1-0)

Recap: Won Vs. Miami Dolphins 21-11.

Breakdown: You have to admit it did look kind of strange to see Cam Newton wearing New England Navy Red and White on Sunday but he did his thing total 230 yards and two rush touchdowns while the Patriots defense looked savvy as ever limiting the Fins to just 87 yards rushing while forcing Fitzmagic into three costly interceptions. Bill Belichick looks to have outsmarted the rest of the league once again en route to another solid season. Newton will continue to avenge all the hates when he takes on Russell Wilson and the Seahawks in Seattle on Sunday Night Football.

Los Angeles Rams

Record: (1-0)

Recap: Won Vs. Dallas Cowboys 20-17.

Breakdown: The Rams had a busy off-season, they built a $5 billion stadium, rebranded their team and released an interesting pair of new uniforms and started their new season looking like the 2018 Rams dominating the line of scrimmage and time of possession. Jared Goff passes the ball efficiently to his favorite target Robert Woods who hauled in 100 receiving yards and new starter Malcolm Brown totaled 110 yards and two big rumbling scores. Defensively, Jalen Ramsey and Aaron Donald applied pressure, tackled big and held the Cowboys to just 3-of-12 on third downs. Los Angeles will look to continue their balanced levels against Carson Wentz and the Eagles in Philly Sunday.

Minnesota Vikings

Record: (0-1)

Recap: Loss Vs. Green Bay Packers 43-34.

Breakdown: With all things considered, (a franchise quarterback, a star running back and receiver, a top ten defense), one would expect big things for the Vikings heading into the 2020 season. We might want to reconsider because Minnesota’s secondary was sore eyes for sight getting roasted by Aaron Rodgers to the tune of 364 passing touchdowns and four touchdowns. Under a new offensive coordinator, the Vikings came out slower than “Gary the Snail,” from Spongebob moving and that doomed them from out the gate. Minnesota will look to start faster, smarter and stronger when they play Phillip Rivers and the Colts in Indianapolis Sunday.

Tampa Bay Bucs

Record: (0-1)

Recap: Loss Vs. New Orleans Saints 34-23.

Breakdown: Nobody has quite been as hyped as the 2020 Tampa Bay Bucs but the New Orleans Saints poured some cold water onto that hysteria Sunday particularly making Tom Brady look like a 43-year-old quarterback. Arguably the Greatest-QB-Of-All-Time, he did not look so good in the land of the Jazz throwing two interceptions including a pick six that was the back-breaker in a pivotal week one game. Penalties and poor offensive line play certainly played a factor but defensively, Tampa Bay looked explosive limiting New Orleans high-octane offense to just 271 yards. Linebacker tandem Devin White and Lavonte David look like the next star linebacker duo and could have a field day against CMC and the Carolina Panthers this Sunday in Tampa as the Bucs search for their first win.

Tennessee Titans

Record: (1-0)

Recap: Won Vs. Denver Broncos 16-14.

Breakdown: The Titans fought an uphill battle all game simply cause they couldn’t get out of their own way. New Tennessee kicker Stephen Gostkowski looked like a veteran that should retire missing three field goals and several extra points, yet thanks to stellar play from Ryan Tannehill and timely rushing by King Henry the Titans were able to escape in Denver. Their special teams will need to play immensely better next week when they take on AFC South foe Gardner Minshew and the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Music City.

Philadelphia Eagles

Record: (0-1)

Recap: Loss Vs. Washington Football Team 27-17.

Breakdown: Off-season injuries have ravaged the Eagles squad and yet they were up 17-0 against the pathetic Washington Football Team by halftime. Then reality set in as Philly’s offensive woes particularly on the offensive line doomed Philly’s chances in the second-half. As for their defense with former Lions cornerback Darius Slay, the Eagles looked fast, hungry and mean so that could certainly be a building block heading into next week’s heavyweight battle against Jared Goff and the high-flying Rams Sunday.

Las Vegas Raiders

Record: (1-0)

Recap: Won Vs. Carolina Panthers, 34-30.

Breakdown: The Las Vegas Raiders kicked off their tenure in Sin City in fittingly, thrilling fashion coming back to down the Panthers late. While their defense surrendered 388 total yards and made Teddy Bridgewater and CMC look like superstars, their offense certainly looked prolific, specifically, second-year back Josh Jacons. After becoming the first back in Raiders history to top 1,000 yards as a rookie, the former Alabama Crimson Tide totaled 139 yards and three touchdowns including the go-ahead score late. Keep your bets coming as the Raiders will kick off their new stadium hosting Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football at Allegiant stadium.

Washington Football Team

Record: (1-0)

Recap: Won Vs. Philly Eagles 27-17.

Breakdown: When the Washington Football team fell down 17-0 to the Philadelphia Eagles I don't think anyone was surprised and expected more of the same from a 3-13 team last season. Then, the second half happened and through the leadership of Dwayne Haskins and unbelievably dominant performance by Ron Rivera’s defensive line, the WFT’s roared back to score 27 straight points while recording 8 sacks and forcing two interceptions against Carson Wentz and the Eagles. The Football Team will look to go (2-0) when they take on Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals in the desert Sunday.

Houston Texans

Record: (0-1)

Recap: Loss Vs. Kansas City Chiefs 34-20.

Breakdown: We can all concur that nobody thought Deshaun Watson and the Houston Texans had a shot in hell to beat the Chiefs in Arrowhead during the season-opener. That being said, there were several silver linings the team can build on starting with running back David Johnson. The former Arizona Cardinal totaled 100 yard and a touchdown in his debut and looked explosive. Former Notre Dame receiver Will Fuller looked healthy and explosive too hauling in 100 receiving yards and defensively the linebacker duo of Zach Cuningham and Benadrick McKinney looked formidable at times. They will each have a tough task this Sunday going up against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens but can continue to build towards the easier part of their schedule.

Dallas Cowboys

Record: (0-1)

Recap: Loss Vs. Los Angeles Rams 20-17.

Breakdown: The 2020 season was supposed to be different for the Cowboys. They got a new coach in Mike McCarthy, they drafted Oklahoma stud receiver CeeDee Lamb and traded or acquired a new revamped defensive line and yet, Dallas looked the exact same as they have the last decade-plus: mediocre. The Cowboys defense surrendered 422 total yards to a Rams offense that possessed the ball for more than 35 minutes and Dallas’s offense led by a stellar performance by Zeke Elliott only scored three points the entire second half. Should we be surprised Dallas will likely go 8-8? No. Should we be disappointed as always? Yes. Big D will have a chance to change all our minds when they face Matt Ryan and the Falcons at home.

Denver Broncos

Record: (0-1).

Recap: Loss Vs. Tennessee Titans 16-14.

Breakdown: It felt like every good player for the Broncos was or got injured and yet without Von Miller, A.J. Bouye, Phillip Lindsay and Courtland Sutton, Denver found a way to lose this game. The Titans missed three field goals and numerous extra points and yet Drew Lock and the Orange Crush could not muster enough offensive plays as well as bonehead coaching under utilizing timeouts doomed the Broncos from winning their home opener. The lone positive they can take away from the game is their defensive line looked in flashes dominant particularly with former Titan, Jurrrell Casey, Nick Chubb and Shelby Harris against the run. Denver will look to right the ship next week when they play Big Ben and that feracious Steeler defense in Pittsburgh this Sunday.

Chicago Bears

Record: (1-0).

Recap: Won Vs. Detroit Lions 27-23

Breakdown: The good, the bad and the ugly. First the ugly, the Bears were dead in the water trailing the Lions 23-6 with Mitch Trubisky looking like he normally does (which is awful) and Chicago struggling to throw the ball and defend the run. Then the fourth quarter happened and I’m not sure what head coach Matt Nagy said but “Money Mitch,” actually lived up to his nickname with two long clutch touchdowns and numerous tight pinpoint throws to roar all the way back into the dub train. Chicago will look to continue their momentum when they face Daniel Jones and the sinking New York Giants in the Windy City Sunday.

Atlanta Falcons

Record: (0-1).

Recap: Loss Vs. Seattle Seahawks 38-25.

Breakdown: The Falcons looked clean in their fresh uni collection but their game was awfully dirty allowing Seahawks star Russell Wilson to dice them up to the tune of 383 total yards. While Matt Ryan and the Dirty Bird carved up Seattle’s defense to 506 yards they also only rushed for 72 yards, fumbled a ball away and threw an interception while just mustering 12 points up a garbage time 13 when the game was already mentally out of reach. Matty Ice and the Falcons will look for redemption in week two as they face Zeke Elliott and the Cowboys in Dallas Sunday.

Los Angeles Chargers

Record: (1-0).

Recap: Won Vs. Cincy Bengals 16-13.

Breakdown: Sporting their electric new uni’s, the Bolts defense looked fast and tremendous holding the Bengals to just 13 points with three sacks, a pick and a forced fumble. As for the offense, it looked subpar led by veteran Tyrod Taylor and both he and Kenaan Allen will need more time to develop chemistry if the Chargers want to win against teams other than one of the worst in football. LA will have a chance to go (2-0) when they take on Patrick Mahomes and the Super-Bowl winning Chiefs in Arrowhead Sunday.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Record: (1-0).

Recap: Won Vs. Indianapolis Colts 27-20.

Breakdown: Is he a starter, is he a back-up?I don’t know but it was “Minshew Magic,” in Duval Sunday completing 19-for-20 passes for 173 yards with three big touchdowns as the Jaguars edged out the Colts. Minshew looked tremendous and rookie corner C.J. Henderon netted first interception in a solid outing as a Pro and JackStax looks to continue their winning ways in Nashville when they take on Ryan Tannehill and the Titans this Sunday.

Indianapolis Colts

Record: (0-1).

Recap: Loss Vs. Jacksonville Jaguars 27-20.

Breakdown: While the Colts dominated the Jaguars offensively compiling over 450 yards off total offense but only had seven points to show for it. They struggled to run the ball with the season-ending injury to Marlon Mack and from that moment, Rivers threw two bonehead interceptions but what was most concerning is the defense, which was supposed to be their strength allowing backup-disguised as a starter Gardner Minshew to complete 19-for-20 passes with three touchdowns. Indy will have to find their defensive rhythm quick as they face off against Kirk Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings at home this Sunday.

Miami Dolphins

Record: (0-1).

Recap: Loss Vs. New England Patriots 21-11.

Breakdown: The Dolphins were, arguably, the busiest team in the off-season with marquee free-agent signings, trades and high draft picks but had a tall task facing Bill Belichick and the new-look Patriots in Foxboro and struggled immensely. Albeit facing a great defense, turnovers killed the Fins chances with three interceptions and rushing for just 87 yards isn’t going to get it done. Unfortunately they welcome another tough defense into Miami when they take on Tre'Davious White and the Bills at home.

Carolina Panthers

Record: (0-1).

Recap: Loss Vs. Las Vegas Raiders 34-30.

Breakdown: A lot of media experts are destroying rookie head coach Matt Rhule for the bonehead move to go for it on fourth down in a shootout game but I saw a lot of positives. Despite the defense being hot garbage, Teddy Bridgewater had a solid outing as a starting quarterback, Christian McCaffrey looked formidable as ever, receiver Robby Anderson is still fast in case anyone forgot so if the offense can continue to score their outlook may be positive in the coming seasons but certainly not in a division with the Falcons, Bucs and Saints. CMC and the Crew will take on Tom Brady and the new look Bucs in Tampa this Sunday.

Detroit Lions

Record: (0-1).

Recap: Loss Vs. Chicago Bears 27-23.

Breakdown: Another game, another blown lead in Motor City, this one an important NFC North battle against the Chicago Bears. To the Lions credit they were dominating the Bears for three quarters outgaining them 426-363 up 23-6. Then Jamie Collins Sr. decided to headbutt a ref and get ejected and two defensive starters left with injuries which opened the door to the Bears and they took full advantage roaring all the way back to a clutch victory. With the Packers being the Packers and Vikings looking to be tough, it’s hard to see Matt Patricia’s squad winning a lot of games if they can’t keep huge leads. The season moves fast as Stafford and the Lions will need to regroup as they take on Aaron Rodgers and the Packers at Lambeau Field Sunday.

New York Giants

Record: (0-1)

Recap: Loss Vs. Pittsburgh Steelers 26-16.

Breakdown: I don’t think anyone realistically believed the Giants were going to beat the Steelers but this was definitely tough to watch at times. Particularly, Big Blue Nation’s offensive line, which was attracious allowing edges Bud Dupree and Vince Williams to destroy superstar Saquon Barkely limiting him to just six yards off 15 carries. The only positive I saw was former Auburn Tiger Darius Slayton looked to be a fringe number one receiver for youngster QB Daniel Jones moving forward. The New York Football Giants will look to redeem themselves against the Chicago Bears this Sunday afternoon.

Cincinnati Bengals

Record: (0-1).

Recap: Loss Vs. Los Angeles Chargers 16-13.

Breakdown: Was the glass half full or half empty? No. 1 pick Joe Burrow looked experienced beyond his years at times but also looked like a rookie in his game throwing a terrible interception and a late shovel pass in crunch time. In the final minutes playing a tough defense, the former LSU Tiger led his time valiantly down the field only for a bogus offensive-pass interference and shank field goal attempt to derail the Bengals chances but for a city starving for a franchise QB, Burrow looks the part already. Cincy will look to jump in the dub column when they take on Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns on Thursday Night Football.

Cleveland Browns

Record: (0-1)

Recap: Loss Vs. Baltimore Ravens 38-6.

Breakdown: Another year, another Browns opening loss: make that 0-15-1 for Cleveland in home openers as they got mentally and physically romped by Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. Baker Mayfield struggled once more with his pocket presence, lack of chemistry with OBJ and penalties and defensive breakdowns doomed Cleveland. Aside from looking slick in their fresh uni’s, expect an average season incoming for the Dawg Pound. Cleveland looks to get back in the win column when they take on their cross town rivals Thursday night, the Cincinnati Bengals.

New York Jets

Record: (0-1).

Recap: Loss Vs. Buffalo Bills 27-17.

Breakdown: It is not news to anyone that the J-E-T-S are T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E but man they struggled week one. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen torched the injury-ravaged Jets both on the ground and the air collecting more rush yards by himself (57) than the entire Jets team as a whole. He also threw for 312 yards to his new toy in Stefon Diggs who looked excellent with a pair of touchdowns. New York plays the injury-riddled San Francisco 49ers at home next week where the Bills look to go (2-0) when they take on the Miami Dolphins in Florida Sunday.
