Player Grades

Quarterbacks

  • Bucs land QB Tom Brady: Tampa Bay got the biggest fish in the pond inking Brady on a two-year deal for $30 million a year. The signing shows the Bucs are all in for the short-term despite the healthy price tag for the 43-year-old. Grade: A.

  • Saints re-sign QB Drew Brees: For New Orleans, this was a no-brainer and got Brees at a relatively good price. Still a Top-10 Quarterback at the very least, Drew Brees will still give you his averages (3,000-4,000 passing yards, 67%+ accuracy with (20/30 touchdowns and only 5-10 interceptions), but the playoff woes (Whether fair or not) are well documented and a standing stationary target for defenses isn’t where the current NFL is anymore. Grade: B+

  • Panthers add QB Teddy Bridgewater: Universally renowned as a game-manager, Bridgewater is 27-12 as a starter in the NFL with a 65% accuracy and a 38-to-25 touchdown to interception ratio. He will not win you games but he will certainly not lose you them either. Love this kid’s toughness, confidence, leadership and resiliency, but is he really a step-up from a former NFL MVP in Cam Newton? With all the money the Panthers are giving him, Carolina has to believe so. Grade: B-

  • Raiders add QB Marcus Mariota: Coming off a disappointing season where he was benched to journeyman Ryan Tannehill, a fresh start might be exactly what Mariota needs. He will be competing with Derek Carr for the starting spot but Raiders Coach John Gruden’s favorite quarterback is always the next one he finds/signs. Mariota is a former Heisman-winning quarterback and one of the best Oregon has had arguably ever so the talent is there no question; can Gruden and Mayock get it out of him remains the question. Grade: C+

  • Colts pick up QB Phillip Rivers. The move makes a lot of sense for both sides. The gunslinger reunites with buddy Frank Wright (Colts head coach) and finally has a real chance to show what he’s got left in the tank behind one of the nastiest lines in the NFL. Can Indianapolis get some depth at skills positions (wide receiver and running back) to get the most out of Rivers; we will see. In a muddled AFC South if Rivers can cut his turnovers in half the Colts will once again be contenders. Grade: B+

  • Titans re-sign QB Ryan Tannehill: Puzzling move to say the least. From the glass half full perspective Tannehill was 9-4 as a starter for the Titans finishing with 27 touchdowns to just 7 interceptions and 65% accuracy in fourteen starts and had Tennessee a mere game away from a Super Bowl berth. The glass half empty perspective is Tannehill’s success largely stemmed from having the NFL’s leading rusher Derrick Henry being unstoppable the majority of the season and a vastly improved defense/defensive scheme. In the three playoff games that mattered most he failed to throw for 100 yards twice including their loss to the Chiefs for a Super Bowl berth. All things considered, I believe Tannehill is a starting quarterback but the Titans identity ends and begins with Mr. Henry making Tannehills’ $100+ million extension questionable to be kind. Grade: C+

  • Bears trade for Nick Foles: The Former Super Bowl MVP is heading to the Windy City. This is a great move for the Bears to provide a healthy competition to Mitch Trubisky who declined immensely after a promising season previous. Nick Foles has a history of coming in and being productive most recently leading the Eagles into the Super Bowl and upsetting the Patriots. Grade: A
