The NFL could be implementing a major change to its games as NFL owners are gathering to vote on an alternative to the NFL’s onside kick option.
According to CBS Sports, the Philadelphia Eagles proposed the idea of attempting to convert a 4th and 15 from the teams’ own 25 as opposed to kicking an onside kick. If the team gets the 15 or more yards they get a first down and retain possession of the ball whereas if they don’t obviously the opposing team takes over wherever the ball is downed.
24 of 32 NFL owners would have to vote on it during the next virtual meeting held May 28th.
A big reason for this proposed change is simply because onside kick success percentages are near nothingness. In 2017, only 22% of onside kicks were successful, in 2018, that rate was just 7% and last season it was just 12%.
Now NFL owners don’t generally approve drastic changes such as this but it will certainly be something interesting to watch moving forward.
