The NFL and NFLPA (players association) are finalizing a new collective bargaining agreement that would change the league’s playoff format. According to the new CBA, the NFL will add two teams (one from each division) to the playoffs making 14 in total.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the NFL hasn’t adjusted its playoff formating since 2002. The six playoff team format has been ongoing since 1990 according to ESPN. Under the new changes the Pittsburgh Steelers (from the AFC) and the Los Angeles Rams (from the NFC) would’ve reached the playoffs.
The prior playoff format allowed two teams in each conference first-round byes, now only one team in each conference receives first-round byes. There are reports that the 16-game season will be extended to 17 in the near future as well.
