Georgetown basketball lost a legend as John Thompson Jr. died at the age of 78.
According to ESPN, Thompson paved the way for African-American coaches being the first black head coach to win a men’s D-1 basketball championship in 1984.
Thompson coached the Hoyas into a Big East powerhouse with 20 NCAA Tournament appearances, 33 Big East Tournament wins, 3 Final Four Appearances and he most wins in Georgetown History with 596.
In his 27 seasons, the three-time conference coach of the year coaches the likes of NBA Hall-of-Famers, Allen Iverson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Ewing along with 23 future NBA draft picks.
He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999 and forever etched into the halls of college basketball history being one of the greatest to ever do it.
