Legendary College Football Coach Johnny Majors passed away on Wednesday at the age of 85. He died peacefully at his Knoxville, Tenn. home surrounded by his loved ones.
A native of Lynchburg, Tennessee, Majors was the epitome of a college football powerhouse coach being inducted into the College Football Hall-of-Fame in 1987.
Majors began his head coaching career in Ames being the Iowa State head coach from 1968-’72 going 24-30-1.
He then took his talents to Pittsburgh coaching the Panthers from 1973-’76 where he found his most success winning a National Championship in 1976 and coaching Heisman winners in Tony Dorsett and Matt Cavanaugh.
Majors then decided to go back to alma mater in Tennessee from 1977-’92 turning around that program and winning seven Bowl games in the process.
He then returned to finish his career back at Pittsburgh from 1993-’96 going 45-45.
Majors is a three-time national coach-of-the-year and went a career 185-137-10 in 28 seasons coaching.
