The 2020 NFL Season kicked off with a bang as the Kansas City Chiefs faced off against the Houston Texans Thursday evening.
Chiefs and Texans fans took a moment before the game to stand in unity which was promptly booed by the great state of Missouri making front-page news the next day in shameful fashion but as for the game it was quite a site to see.
Kansas City revealed their Super Bowl Championship Banner on the 50-year-line upper deck sideline and then the game was on.
Patrick Mahomes had a pedestrian game as far as his standards go completing 24 for 32 passes for 211 yards and three touchdowns but the player that took the cake was rookie sensation Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
The former LSU Tiger crushed the Texans defensive-line rumbling for 138 yards off 25 carries with his first (of hopefully many) touchdown for the Red and Gold.
According to PFF, CEH made history being the first rookie since 2006 to have more than 95 yards after contact in Week 1 with 106 yards. He also made team history having the third most rush yards for a running back debut since the Chiefs’ Kareem Hunt and legend Christian Okoye, so Chiefs fans have to be excited about this young stud’s potential.
The defense had their say as well as Chris Jones justified his monster off-season extension harassing Deshaun Watson into 1.5 sacks and Frank Clark at full-health had several pressures and a sack too. In total, Sack Nation totaled four sacks and seven pressures making it hard for Houston and their lack of weapons to catch any type of rhythm.
The run defense was porous as running back David Johnson channeled his 2016 season finishing the evening with 100+ total yards and a touchdown but after the Chiefs took a 17-7 lead at halftime this forced Houston to throw the ball more than they wanted too and ultimately get away from coach Bill O’Brian’s game plan.
Kansas City will head to Inglewood to take on Joey Bosa and the Los Angeles Chargers in their brand new arena, the SoFi Stadium.
