Houston Texans to fire general manager/head coach Bill O’Brien after 0-4 start

Chris's Corner

The Houston Texans are turning the page announcing the firing of general manager/head coach Bill O’ Brien Tuesday.

According to ESPN, the McNair family that owns the Texans fired O’Brien swiftly after losing to the 0-3 Vikings in Minnesota Sunday.

O’Brien was hired by the McNair family in 2014 and guided the muddled Texans to a 52-48 record with four playoff appearances including four AFC South Division Titles in his six years as coach.

This was not the reason he got fired, he got fired for his moves as a general manager which he took over following Brian Gaine’s dismissal in 2019.

As general manager, the 50-year-old O’Brien traded former No. 1 Draft pick Jadeveon Clowney for nothing, traded two first round picks and a second for offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil and wide receiver Kenny Still (both of which are not very good) and finally traded one of the best receivers of the decade in DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals for the oft-injured running back David Johnson and a second-round pick.

The Hopkins move alone should have gotten him fired but with the Texans coming out of the gate going 0-4 a third of the way through the season his fate was sealed.

73-year-old Romeo Crennel becomes the team’s interim head coach and with the announcement being the oldest coach in the league but for the future coaches like Josh Mcdaniels of the Patriots and Eric Bieniemy of the Chiefs look to be the front runners for the future opening position.
