Former Washington Bullets star player and coach Wes Unseld died Tuesday morning at the age 74.
The Louisville, Kentucky native was nothing short of a stud at the University of Louisville earning him two All-American nods in 1967 and ‘68. He was then drafted second overall by the Baltimore Bullets in the 1968 NBA draft.
Although he was undersized for a center at just 6’7’, 245-pounds, Unseld’s determination was unmatched making him a five-time NBA All-Star, the NBA MVP in 1969, and NBA Finals MVP and Champion in 1978.
Unseld was also the 1969 Rookie-of-the-Year and his numbers (31) and (41) hang in the rafters of Louisville and Washington. According to ESPN, he averaged 10.8-points and 14-boards for the Bullets and 20.6-points and 19-boards for the Cardinals.
Post-retirement, Unseld then took up a bit of coaching from 1987-94 as well as a seven-year stint as the team’s general manager from 1996-2003, reaching the playoffs once during his tenure. He was a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall-of-Fame inductee and was renowned by Wizards of past and present.
