Alabama gymnastics is under fire as three Crimson Tide female gymnasts alleged a racist environment while attending the program.
Last Thursday, Ex Bama gymnasts Tia Kiaku described in a social media post the systemic racism she experienced during her time with the team including an assistant coach/teammates using racist language.
According to ESPN, Kiaku detailed an incident in which an assistant coach made a comment when three black women were doing vault drills together: “what is this, the back of the bus?”
She also said there were numerous occasions where white women would use the N-word and there were no repercussions for doing so.
No coach or player was publicly disciplined but the assistant was warned after Kiaku filed a Title IX complaint.
This caused Kiaku to leave the team in the fall right before the 2020 season began.
Current Crimson Tide gymnasts Makari Doggette and Lexi Graber both shared their horrifically negative experiences there while also confirming Kiaku’s claims.
While they did not vocalize leaving the program they were extremely regretful, sorrowful and disappointed by the incidents
