The University of Florida is the next college to make progressive changes to its campus removing its “Gator Bait,” cheer from sporting events.
According to ESPN, as part of a university-wide review to take steps against racism, school president Kent Fuchs highlighted the cheer as a “historic racist image associated with the song/phrase,” and thus needed to be removed.
According to the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia, African American babies were used as gator bait and the term “alligator bait,” was used as a racial slur against African Americans.
