After spending 15 seasons at the Kansas City’s Chiefs punter, Dustin Colquitt was released by the Chiefs Tuesday morning. Colquitt, a former third-round pick out of Tennessee, went to two Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl Championship before his release.
Colquitt was the longest tenured Chiefs on the roster, breaking almost every one of Kansas City’s punting records. He averaged nearly 45-yards per kick for his career, according to Pro-Football Reference. Colquitt is a co-founder of “TeamSmile,” an organization that offers free dental care to underserved children and his work there got him nominated for the Walter Payton Man-of-the-Year selections in both 2018 and 2019.
With his release the Chiefs save about $2 million in cap space that will surely be allocated to the NFL draft selections or perhaps toward new contacts for Chris Jones and eventually Patrick Mahomes. Kansas City has punted just 94 times since Patrick Mahomes became the starting quarterback (fewest in the NFL), according to ESPN.
