Drew Brees issues apology following backlash for kneeling comments

Chris's Corner

Following Drew Brees’ immensely tone-deft comments regarding “disrespecting the flag,” the Saints star quarterback issued a lengthy apology that can be simplified to “completely missing the mark.”

On Wednesday Brees had an interview with Yahoo Finance where he was asked his thoughts about Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the National Anthem where he retorted a similar sentiment that he will “never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America.”

These statements fueled a mass rage/disappointment churning from teammates (Malcolm Jenkins, Michael Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders) as well as former players (Ed Reed) and of course, fans around the country.

The frustrations with Brees, I believe, was justified as perception from (a non-colored person) was the reasoning behind Kaepernick’s kneeling was to “disrespect the flag and ultimately the country,” when in actuality the reason for his stance was to combat police brutality and ultimately racial injustice that is immensely prevalent in this country.

Friday, Brees released that lengthy apology on Instagram stating “heartbreak,” for the pain/disappointment he had caused and a willingness to learn and educate himself on the prevalent issues of injustice and racism.
