Renee Montgomery will take a stand bigger than sports as the Atlanta Dream guard announced she will sit out the 2020 WNBA season to work on off-court initiatives.
With her announcement Thursday, she became the first WNBA player to publicly say she won’t play in the league’s returned season July proposal in Florida.
According to ESPN, Montgomery has been an important piece in the Black Lives Matter movement donating raising money and now doing speaking engagements in Atlanta and more.
Dream coach Nicki Collen said “while she is sad that Montgomery won’t be in a Dream uniform, she is extremely proud of her passion for her foundation, her outreach in the community and her chance to impact Black Lives Matter from her platform.”
The WNBA is set to return for a 22-game season in Florida in July.
