Former Clemson stars Deshaun Watson and DeAndre Hopkins announced they are petitioning the university to remove the name of John C. Calhoun from the school’s honors college, the pair announced Tuesday.
According to ESPN, Calhoun (a South Carolina native) served as the vice president under John Quincy Adams from 1825 to 1829 and advocated for slavery. The school itself was built on Calhoun’s Fort Hill Plantation where according to the school’s website he enslaved 70-80 African-Americans.
According to CBS Sports, the two shared a link to the petition on Twitter and Instagram.
Watson and Hopkins attended Clemson University from 2014-16 and 2010-12, respectively cementing as two of the best Tigers to sport Orange and Purple.
The pair were also teammates at the Houston Texans prior to Hopkins being traded to the Arizona Cardinals this off-season.
