The Chicago Cubs made the coolest move of the MLB draft when they selected local prospect Ed Howard with the No. 16 overall pick during the 2020 MLB Draft.
The athletic shortstop hails from Southside’s Mount Carmel High School and despite having his senior season along with prom sidelines the 18-year-old still had dreams immortalized when the Cubs selected him.
According to Yahoo Sports, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Howard became the first player since Jayson Werth in ‘97 to be an Illinois-norm player selected in the first round.
According to ESPN, Howard hit .421 with three homers in 35 games as a junior at Mount Carmel.
He also was a Little League Word Series Star starting for the 2014 Jackie Robinson West Little League Team that advanced to the finals.
Both the Cubs and Howard are excited about what the future holds.
