The Atlanta Falcons have announced the firing of head coach Dan Quinn and General Manager Thomas Dimitroff Monday.
The nail was in the coffin for Quinn and Dimitroff once the Falcons lost to the Panthers 23-16, falling to 0-5 for the first time since 1997.
According to ESPN, Team president Rich McKay will assume day-to-day football operations and Raheem Morris will be promoted to head coach each on an interim basis.
The 50-year-old Quinn in his sixth season finished his time in the A-T-L with a 43-42 record overall.
In the aftermath of blowing a 28-3 lead in Super Bowl LI against Tom Brady and the Patriots, the Falcons went just 24-29 in three seasons since the Super Bowl appearance including three tremendously bad blown lead losses during the regular season.
It wasn’t all bad in the city of Peaches as Quinn had a 3-2 playoff record with a Super Bowl appearance finishing eighth in the NFL and fourth in the NFC in overall wins since 2008.
Dimitroff’s role as a general manager was key to this as he drafted the likes of Matt Ryan, Julio Jones Jake Matthews, Grady Jarrett and Deion Jones all of which are the foundational pieces the Falcons have been built on but had some recent head-scratchers and misses too.
First round pick Vic Beasley was a one-hit wonder in his four seasons, cornerbacks Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford aren’t on the team and the jury still remains with Keanu Neal and Takk McKinley who have dealt with lots of injuries during their career.
Ultimately, I think this was the right move for the Falcons who mentally have never since that Super Bowl blunder.
